Telecommuting has long been a rapidly popularizing trend in the professional world. Many studies show that telecommuting helps both the employer and employee, by reducing distractions (ideally) and eliminating commuting time.
Then why is it Yahoo CE Marissa Mayer banning such a desirable employment option? There’s actually numerous reasons why. A recent New Yorker article suggests that it may be because telecommuting hinders corporate culture and the travel of information because there is no informal interaction.
There are other stigmas that go along with being a telecommuter. They are often viewed as lazy, uncommitted, and their commuting coworkers may have a subtle dislike for them, just because they don’t literally ‘show up for work.’
But don’t let this all discourage you! There are, of course, immense benefits for telecommuting as well. It saves time, money, and is eco-friendly. In fact, Mobile Work Exchange promoted a telework week for March 4th to the 8th and showed off some mind blowing stats for that week, such as saving 15.1 million miles of commuting.
If you feel you can’t handle working at home either, or just don’t have the proper means, there are telecommuting options here at SoTechie and many other coworking sites as well.
If you aren’t teleworking but do desire to, this Forbes article suggests several ways to approach your boss about it. Just be sure it’s a job that doesn’t require consistent face time. Remember it’s a two way street, so you must also give your boss reasons why this benefits him/her as well.
